18th April is International World Heritage Day. It’s a day for celebrating national heritage and also aims to promote solidarity in safeguarding heritage worldwide. The theme for 2020 is ‘Shared Heritage, Shared Responsibility’ recognising the value of all different types of heritage throughout diverse communities around the world. Here in Leicestershire, we are lucky enough to base our business in our own miniature heritage site, the 425 year old Narborough Hall.

The shop was set up here 28 years ago to fund the restoration and maintenance of the grade II listed Hall and that's still its role today. It's a cause that’s important to me as Narborough Hall is my childhood home and my parents have lived here for the last 44 years.

In the early 1970s the Hall was under threat of demolition. Luckily it was saved and in 1976 my parents bought the house, by then in a very poor and dilapidated state. They spent many years painstakingly restoring it to its former glory. But the demands of such an old building soon outstripped my parents’ teacher salaries and the need to find a way to generate an income to maintain the building became obvious.

Narborough Hall opened its doors as a shop in 1992 when I was 17. I was smitten with it from the very beginning. I can still remember the excitement of opening up our first ever delivery of products. That excitement has never left me.

The business still funds the upkeep and maintenance of the building to this day. With the contribution of our wonderful customers, we hope to continue doing so for many more years to come. A proportion of every single pound you spend in our shop and online, goes towards preserving Narborough Hall for the future. Thank you for your support.

You can read more about the building’s long history on our website here. https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.morethanjustagift.co.uk/a/s/pages/history-of-narborough-hall
